& Other Tick-Triggered Illness (After All Else Has Failed)
By Dr. Donald Liebell
Your life and health is not a movie. Tick-triggered illness is so much more than simply a Lyme bacterial infection. It is so much more than a matter of the three publicized co-infections.
Lyme Borrelia isn't the star of a show...
Babesia, Ehrlichia, and Bartonella are not co-stars.
These are just a few among countless other infectious microorganisms potential agents of disease.
There is no denial, even from the CDC that the bacteria, Bartonella is often transmitted by ticks, along with Borrelia, the bacteria associated with Lyme disease. Bartonella can affect nearly every organ of the body.
Here are some of the wide variety of symptoms:
Fatigue/Malaise Restlessness Aggressive or Combative behavior
Insomnia Mono-like symptoms Liver and Spleen problems
Brain/Head Problems, including headaches, seizures and cognitive impairments
Anxiety Other Psychiatric Problems Gastrointestinal Problems/Pain
Skin Problems: rashes, red spots or nodules Eye Problems Sore Throat
Muscle, Bone, and Joint Problems Heart Problems Nerve Pathology
Do you notice that all the possible symptoms of infection from Lyme Borrelia, Babesia, Bartonella, and Ehrlicia include practically every health complaint people have?
The Babesia Factor:
Should We Take this Lyme Disease Co-infection Seriously? Can Traditional Western Medicine Effectively Treat it?
Of equal or perhaps even greater importance is the infection known as Babesiosis. It seems clear that Western medicine gives little attention to it, with respect to both diagnosis and treatment.
Babesia are single-celled microorganisms known as protozoa. Their life cycle is even more complex than Borrelia’s.
Protozoa are NOT bacteria.
Thus medicines designed to kill bacteria do not likely affect Babesia.
It seems that Babesiosis is rarely considered or diagnosed. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in symptomatic people it “usually is diagnosed by examining blood specimens under a microscope and seeing Babesia parasites inside red blood cells.”
How often do you think Babesiosis is on the mind of the average physician?
How often do think such blood specimens are analyzed by a doctor or professional diagnostic laboratory?
In my opinion, this makes Babesia of greater importance, combined with its lack of effective and/or safe treatment with drugs. Everybody talks about Lyme disease, and refers to Babesiosis as a secondary concern. It’s called one of the co-infections of Lyme.
Here’s what the CDC say about it:
“Many people who are infected with Babesia microti feel fine and do not have any symptoms. Some people develop nonspecific flu-like symptoms, such as fever, chills, sweats, headache, body aches, loss of appetite, nausea, or fatigue.
*Because Babesia parasites infect and destroy red blood cells, babesiosis can cause a special type of anemia called hemolytic anemia. This type of anemia can lead to jaundice and dark urine. Babesiosis can be a severe, life-threatening disease, particularly in people who: do not have a spleen or whose spleen does not function normally; have a weak immune system for other reasons (such as cancer, lymphoma, or AIDS); have other serious health conditions (such as liver or kidney disease); or are elderly.
Complications of babesiosis can include: a low and unstable blood pressure; severe hemolytic anemia (hemolysis);
a very low platelet count (thrombocytopenia); disseminated intravascular coagulation (also known as “DIC” or consumptive coagulopathy), which can lead to blood clots and bleeding; malfunction of vital organs (such as the kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart); or death. (Source: http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/babesiosis/disease.html)
I rarely see that people have had Babesiosis considered by the numerous doctors they’ve visited in their futile and frustrating quest to find out what’s wrong with them. It appears that the lab tests are not good, as is the case with Lyme Borrelia. Plus, any drugs that cannot cross the blood brain barrier are doomed to failure.
If Babesia are in your brain, it is highly unlikely that any conventional Western medication or herbal remedy will get the job done.
It is my conviction that when drug-based treatment has disastrous consequences and outcomes, we must look to methods that enable the REAL healer to succeed: our IMMUNE SYSTEMS. I cannot prove the success of patients recovering from Babesiosis utilizing homeopathic bio-enegetic methods. My patients can only attest to being thrilled with their improvements.
Ehrlichiosis: Another Sinister Piece of the Tick Triggered Illness Puzzle
Internet searches for information on the Lyme disease co-infection of Ehrlichia produce some fascinating information. You can learn that this group of bacteria can cause flu-like symptoms such as headache, muscle aches, nausea, cough, diarrhea, vomiting, join pain, etc. It can compromise your immune system (it kills white blood cells), leaving you susceptible to other infections such as Candida fungus.
In addition, you can discover that you may not have any symptoms until a couple of weeks after a tick bite… or have no symptoms at all. In fact it appears that Ehrlichia isn’t much of a concern to “modern medicine” at all. And of course, the only medical approach suggested is antibiotics.
According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, “some people infected with ehrlichiosis may have symptoms so mild that they never seek medical attention, and the body fights off the illness on its own.”
Hmm… your body fights it off on its own?
What an original concept!
Yes, your body can indeed fight off infection.
Yet it seems that treatment methods that seek to boost your body’s ability to do so, they are pathetically and erroneously labeled “alternative medicine.” The last I heard, human immune systems have been fighting infection for as long as we’ve walked the earth.
The Ehrlichia group of bacteria were first identified in 1990, but I think it’s reasonable to assume they’ve been inhabiting human bodies long before. Borrelia, the Lyme bacteria has been found by scientists to have been around for thousands of years!
I do not directly treat Ehrlichia or any other infection. My treatment methods are designed to support your body so its immune system strength improves... so your body can heal itself. That is how my patients are recovering from the Lyme complex of diseases and dysfunction.
The Mayo Clinic says your body can fight off illness on its own, and I concur. With a comprehensive system involving specialized ear acupuncture, pinpoint specific bioenergetic supplementation, and other treatments, your body may be enabled to fight off Ehrlichia and the other microbes associated with Lyme disease.
Beware the Bartonella
Tick-triggered illness is so much more than simply a Lyme bacterial infection. There is no denial, even from the CDC that the bacteria, Bartonella is often transmitted by tick, along with Borrelia, the bacteria associated with Lyme disease. Bartonella can affect nearly every organ of the body.
Here are some of the wide variety of symptoms: fatigue/malaise, restlessness, aggressive or combative behavior, insomnia, mono-like symptoms, liver and spleen problems, headaches, seizures, cognitive impairments, anxiety, gastrointestinal problems, pain, skin problems, eye problems, sore throat, muscle and joint problems, heart problems, and nerve disease.
Do you notice that all the possible symptoms of infection from Lyme Borrelia, Babesia, Bartonella, and Ehrlicia include practically every health complaint people can have?
Antibiotics clearly have not been the solution. Neither have symptomatic treatments such as anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, psychiatric drugs, and other medicines. This begs for the need for wellness-based medicine. Boosting one's immune system to greater strength is necessary and urgent.
